7 Little-Known Benefits of Vitamin C for Your Skin, Hair and Health

Let’s paint a scenario. You wake up to the sound of your alarm reminding you that another day has reared its head, and unfortunately, yours is all foggy. Your nose is stuffed, you feel a fever coming on and nothing can motivate you to get out of bed—not even your favorite barista at the neighborhood coffee shop. You’re getting sick and your first thought (thanks to the nagging of your loving mother) is to load up on vitamin C to kick those germs to the curb, ASAP! This is a great go-to, but we’re sharing 7 little known benefits of vitamin C for skin, hair and health!

Along with improving and strengthening your immune system, vitamin C possesses some impressive benefits for many of the skin conditions you might be struggling with. “Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that is an antioxidant that helps form and maintain connective tissue. An antioxidant helps capture free radical damage caused by oxidative stress or sun damage to the skin. It is also essential for collagen production.

So how exactly can this essential ingredient found in many skin care and hair care products help you?

1. Correct Dark Spots and Hyperpigmentation

Depending on the condition of your skin, how much time you spend in the sun and your ethnic background, you might have more dark spots than some of your peers. Though this is normal and part of the aging process, vitamin C can help to reverse the appearance of dark spots.

2. Block Free Radicals

Though basking in the sunlight feels great in the moment, any time you expose your skin to dangerous rays, you put yourself at risk for damage. In addition to wearing sunscreen, no matter how cloudy or bright it is, you should also use vitamin C.

3. Minimize Dryness and Wrinkles

Winter or not, you might find yourself struggling with dry skin patches or perpetually thirsty cells. No matter how much lotion or moisturizer you lather on, you still feel flaky, itchy or struggle with redness. That’s because you’re not focusing on a star ingredient that could make a difference, Vitamin C may be an important part of a moisturizer or serum, since it helps cells mature and differentiate normally.

4. Boost Collagen Production

While Botox and fillers are an extreme way to treat skin that loses its elasticity over time, another way to approach your routine is to consider the nutrients that naturally help your skin stay young. Vitamin C is essential to the development of new collagen in your skin. Therefore, without it, the skin will get thinner and less supple with age. In order to keep it available at all stages of collagen formation, it should be used topically as well as taken orally.

5. Repair Damaged Hair

You might not realize it, but our hair is impacted by our environment almost as much as our skin. Because the effects don’t instantly show up in a noticeable way, we forget about protecting it in a more deliberate way. Our hair is damaged by UV and pollution, as well as many other things we do to it, and vitamin C can help repair some of this damage the same way it helps skin repair.

6. Prevent Gum and Bone Disease

That glass of OJ (or packet of Emergen-C) that you take at the first sign of sickness might help give your immune system a boost, but  it can also do more than just keep you from encountering coughing fits. Vitamin C helps to prevent gum disease and probably helps to keep bones healthy in a roundabout way through its assistance with collagen formation.

7. Fight Off Fatigue

In addition to all of the incredible benefits mentioned above, another perk of vitamin C is what it does for your mind and your overall mood. Being nutritionally balanced (that includes getting enough vitamin C) has been shown to improve overall cellular function and general health. This can lead to better quality of life in general. Several studies have also suggested that vitamin C improves mood but the mechanics of this is still unknown.

Epionce Anti-Aging Lip Renewal

Epionce Anti-Aging Lip Renewal is a twice daily moisturizer developed specifically for the unique lip area. Because this area of the body can be challenging to keep looking soft and smooth, particularly in the winter months, Anti-Aging Lip Renewal improves hydration, as well as to help diminish visible signs of aging. Thus, keep these tips in mind for incorporating this product into your daily regimen. Our clients are enjoying the benefits!

epionce anti aging eye lip creamHydration is Key!

Actually, the proper amount of hydration is key to healthy-looking skin all over the body, and our lips are no exception. In fact, the outer layer of skin on the lip is very thin and as a result, moisture evaporates from our lips much faster than ordinary skin which causes them to dry out easily. Luckily, Anti-Aging Lip Renewal’s formula retains moisture, so your lips will be less prone to chapping and irritation. Like your Renewal Facial product, Anti-Aging Lip Renewal does more than just moisturize but also provides the key oils that the skin needs such as barrier-boosting cholesterol, ceramide and fatty acids.

How It Works

As its name suggests, Anti-Aging Lip Renewal helps visibly improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth. Also, soft-focus technology diffuses light so visible fine lines and wrinkles will appear less noticeable. So, Epionce botanicals hydrate skin, while diminishing the visible appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on your lips.

Anti-Aging

Lastly like your favorite Renewal Facial product, Anti-Aging Lip Renewal has optimal benefit when applied only twice per day. Actually, traditional waxy lip balms applied multiple times per day only sit on the skin’s surface to hold in water and make lips “feel better” without addressing other causes of chapped lips. In fact, ingredients in Anti-Aging Lip Renewal works similarly to Renewal Facial products and its formula is a lotion base encouraging healthier skin, long-lasting hydration and less visible irritation when used only twice daily. Epionce is safe to use along with your Renewal Facial product morning and night to reveal smoother, softer lips.

Ultimate Guide to Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is one of the hottest new skin care services in the industry.  That’s right…you’re certainly intrigued now. Here’s our ultimate guide to dermaplaning…

It’s not really new though. Japanese women have been utilizing facial “shaving” as an anti aging treatment for decades.

Today, I would like to take you on an exfoliation endeavor. I will teach you all about dermaplaning, from what it is, to who should receive it, and why you’ll keep it up in the future.

What is Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is a physical skin rejuvenation treatment that removes dead skin and vellus facial hair (peach fuzz), producing more radiant, smooth skin. An Esthetician or RN gently strokes a sterile blade along the surface of the skin to “shave” off unwanted cells and hair.

If you’re thinking to yourself now, “you want to put a what to my face?” – you are not the only one.

Yes, a sterile surgical blade is used, and yes, many women initially express concerns.

All of these women, though, quickly come to love the results (in my experience).

The service is completely safe and pain-free. It’s important to iterate the importance of finding a trained, licensed professional to perform this service. This is not something you can do at home. This is not something an inexperienced provider should do. Dermaplaning takes precision and must be performed by an experienced professional.

Dermaplaning vs. Shaving

Dermaplaning is not facial shaving, but it is. Have I lost you? Shaving is defined as “cutting the hair off one’s face with a razor.” Dermaplaning uses a scalpel blade, not a razor, but it does cut the hair off the face. Dermaplaning works in similar fashion to at-home razors but is significantly more aggressive.
Both the blade and razors are placed at a 45-degree angle to achieve optimum results with a minimal result in injury (you may experience the occasional nick).

So, what’s the difference?

  • Dermaplaning is more aggressive than shaving.
  • Dermaplaning uses a surgical, disposable blade.
  • Dermaplaning cannot be performed at home.
  • Dermaplaning blades are singular, whereas razors are usually stacked with 2-3 blades.
  • Dermaplaning is a skin rejuvenation treatment intended to remove dead skin cells and improve fine lines, wrinkles, and improve skin tone and texture.
  • Dermaplaning should not be used to get rid of terminal hair (such as beard hair).
  • Dermaplaning should not be received any sooner than 21 days apart.

Let’s now discuss the benefits so you may understand why the industry is abuzz over this service.

Benefits of Dermaplaning

Fact: Did you know Marilyn Monroe regularly shaved her face?

  • Ask any skin care professional (or Hollywood actress) what the secret to flawless, youthful skin is, and they’ll tell you it’s exfoliation.
  • Dermaplaning is one of the best methods of exfoliation that has zero downtime – a major plus.
  • Some clients experience mild erythema (superficial reddening of the skin), but it subsides quickly. Besides that, and the radiant skin recently achieved, no one would ever know a service was rendered

Top 11 Benefits of Dermaplaning

  1. Eliminates vellus hair and dead skin cells.
  2. Increases product absorption and efficacy (products work better).
  3. Promotes cellular proliferation (your anti aging BFF.)
  4. Minimizes fine lines and wrinkles.
  5. Improves skin texture.
  6. Lessen acne occurrence.
  7. Makeup application is smooth and flawless.
  8. No down time. (Seriously, you can schedule this at lunch.)
  9. Brightens skin and reduces hyperpigmentation.
  10. Great alternative for those with sensitive skin or rosacea.
  11. Safe for all skin types.

Exfoliating the skin also stimulates circulation and increases blood flow to the epidermal layers of the skin. The epidermis does not contain blood vessels and receives nutrients through diffusion. By stimulating blood flow, essential nutrients are delivered to the epidermis and thereby supports anti aging and radiant skin.

What is a Dermaplaning Service Like?

As mentioned earlier, dermaplaning is a skin rejuvenation treatment that is safe and highly effective without downtime. The service takes less than 1 hour with results lasting 4-8 weeks. It can be repeated monthly.

If you have questions or ready to schedule, contact a New Leaf Wellness staff member today! We’re now offering dermaplaning at all locations.
